--------------------------------------------------------------------

Fort Hawkins was established in 1806 by President Thomas Jefferson and Indian Agent Col. Benjamin Hawkins as an official U.S. Army Fort and Indian Factory for trading and meeting with Native Americans. At the time, it was the western frontier and a wilderness. It overlooked the ancient Indian Mounds of the "Old Fields" held sacred by the Muskogee Creek Nation, the Ocmulgee River, the Lower Creek Pathway that became the Federal Road connecting Washington, D.C. to Mobile and New Orleans, and the future site of the city of Macon founded across the river seventeen years later.

  3. Love to see historic sites. Thanks for posting. When we traveled to Walt Disney World recently I saw a ton of sites I would love to have stopped and visited. It could take me three days to drive to Disney but, my husband is all about the park! LOL He drives straight through; a 20 hour drive for us with all the stops we make! LOL Thank you for hosting Outdoor Wed.

  4. Great history lesson. Thanks. When I was stationed in New Orleans I traveled all over the south seeing all the civil war battlegrounds and such, nothing like this. Funny to think of so far east being the western wilderness. I live in Oregon and many easterners *still* think it is the wilderness! Thanks for the meme!!
