I love old historic buildings….so this week I am visiting some of the ones found in town and sharing them with you!

The Hay House - In the mid-1800s, William Butler Johnston was the keeper of the Confederate treasury, but the mansion he built is the real treasure he left behind. Inspired by the palazzos of Florence and Rome during a three-year honeymoon in Europe, Johnston and his wife, Anne, spent four years building an 18,000-square-foot Italian Renaissance Revival mansion that is now a National Historic Landmark.

In 1862, the Confederate Treasury established a major depository at Macon, and Johnston was the receiver of Confederate deposits. Macon became the most important depository in the South, second only to Richmond. Legend states that a hidden room in a staircase in the house stored the Confederate gold. When Stoneman fired on Macon, he aimed at the prominent cupola on the Hay House. The shot instead hit the Holt House, now known as the Cannonball House.

The Cannonball House  - Built in 1853 by Judge Asa Holt, this beautiful antebellum house is considered an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture of the Old South. It became known as the Cannonball House after it was struck by a cannon ball fired by Union cavalry forces under Gen. George Stoneman during the Battle of Dunlap Hill on July 30, 1864. Stoneman, located approximately 3 miles east on the Clinton Road, fired the shot which "struck the sand sidewalk, passed through the second column from the left on the gallery and entered the parlor over a window, landing unexploded in the hall. Its course may be traced by the mended column, a patch in the parlor plaster, and the dent in the hall floor."

Sidney Lanier Cottage -  Great American Poet Sidney Lanier, author of "The Marshes of Glynn" and "Song of the Chattahoochee," was born in this Victorian cottage in 1842. Lanier was a private in the Confederate Army, was captured while commanding a blockade runner, and was imprisoned in Point Lookout, Maryland. There he contracted tuberculosis, which eventually killed the brilliant linguist, musician, mathematician and lawyer, at the age of 39. Lake Lanier is named in his honor.

Thursday (April 22) will mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a day that is meant to inspire appreciation for the Earth’s environment. For more information about the history, etc of Earth Day, here is the link to its Wiki .Do you do anything special to acknowledge the day?

I usually use the day as an excuse to plant something new in the yard. I plant items in memory or honor of a friend or family member…. something I can watch grow/bloom and think of that person and smile. I already have my special person (a friend) selected for this year… I just need to go pick something out to plant (I will try to take a picture for next week).

I have actually planted many roses for female family and friends…..David Austin roses for both of my grandmothers….

and also some gardenias…….

For the men… I usually try to go with a tree… such as a crape myrtle……

or a spice bush … (or some other shrub)…..

Some helpful gardening links (from on of my favorite places, Lowe’s)

Sunday thoughts……

This seems like a good thing to share with you all on a Sunday! I was having a bad day Friday….. nothing seemed to be going right…. I found myself fighting tears all morning … so headed to Wal-mart… not sure why…. perhaps I was headed for my favorite brand of Edy’s ice cream (double fudge brownie is oh-so-g00d!) but I ended up not even going in the store!

Outside the store were some of the “dreaded tables”…you all know the ones…they are usually selling something you really don’t need…and whether you buy or not is often determined by whatever mood you are in for the day… but that day the tables were manned by some Army Veterans who were collecting money for Veterans Support Organization

All the guys were friendly….. not pushing for donations…. and I stopped to talk to them. My bad day evaporated as soon as I looked them in the eye and thanked them for sacrificing and paying for the freedoms that my family and I enjoy…... I stayed and talked to them for awhile and felt much better when I left to head home…..

We need to remember (more often) the brave men and women who have volunteered their lives….sacrificing themselves and their families….. a simple thank you means alot to most… but there are some organizations that are helping in other ways…. and Veterans Support Organization is one of them.

Take/make the time to stop and tell them thanks…and let them know that we do care!

Okay..I am off my soap box now… and will be back on Wednesday with something from outdoor!

The Braves won 16-5 and everyone got a good look at Jason Heyward who hit a 3 run homerun his first major league at bat. Yes, my family was among the crowd chanting “Let’s go Hey-ward” before he even got up to the plate to bat
